Emergency Animal Sheltering Workshop

Brought to you by the Central Vermont Disaster Animal Response Team (CVDART), this Emergency Animal Sheltering workshop is designed to teach participants the basic elements of setting up and operating an emergency pet shelter in their own communities using live animals. We’ll also cover basic pet behavior and handling. Our goal is to continue to build our ranks of trained volunteer responders in Central Vermont for both local and state-wide emergencies involving animals. The Windham Disaster Animal Response Team is hosting this free training for its team members and interested community volunteers. Come find out what the team is doing to ensure that animals are not the forgotten victims of natural and man-made disasters. We’ll practice protocols for setting up, operating and breaking down a temporary animal shelter. Team members will also learn basic animal handling and stress reduction techniques. Technical Large Animal Rescue – Awareness Level

The Awareness level course will prepare farmers, first responders, law enforcement and animal control officers, veterinarians and serious horse/cattle owners with tactics, techniques and heavy rescue procedures to safely respond to emergency incidents such as trailer wrecks, animals trapped in mud and holes, barn fires, and loose on highways. It will feature handling techniques, tactics and procedures for vertical lift, mud rescue and trailer overturn. Feature demonstrations with live animals, walk through of trailer overturns and barn fire scenarios. It is also intended to include management level and non-deployable personnel who need to have Awareness level understanding of response to TLAER incidents, but rarely expect to actually be on scene for these types of events. A certificate is awarded upon completion.

Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (TLAER) Awareness Course

This course is designed for first responders, animal control officers and veterinarians and will cover safe and effective extraction techniques and appropriate equipment to be used in the technical rescue of large animals.

Topics to be Covered:

  • Emergency and disaster preparedness for large animals based on the Incident Command System
  • Large animal senses and behavior—normal and stress related
  • Containment and restraint
  • Critical medical concerns
  • Roles of specific responders
  • Simple manipulation methods
  • Facility evacuation planning
  • Emergency field humane euthanasia
  • Equipment recommendations and instructions for use
  • Discussion of different rescue conditions and scenarios
  • Using community resources
  • Demos and hands-on exercises of behavior, approach, handling, restraint,leading
  • And much more…

Cost:
This course is part of the 5 day New England Animal Control/Humane Academy but is offered as a single day workshop for $130.00 (This includes parking fee and lunch.)
